Starting School
At Furze Platt Infant School, we understand that starting school is a big step for children and families and we want to help your child feel prepared and excited to join their new class. We are passionate about giving every child the best possible start to their school journey. We are committed to working with parents, families and other professionals and believe that with good preparation and encouragement children are more likely to settle in easily and happily at school.
Preparing your child to start school
We understand that all children develop at their own pace and when starting school some children need more help than others. Practising key skills at home before your child starts at FPIS will help them to feel emotionally and practically prepared, making their transition into school a happy and positive experience. Some skills will take time to master, so it is good to introduce them gradually as part of your child's daily routine.

Say hello to Ready Teddy!
Ready Teddy is a transition tool that supports children, families and teachers throughout the Reception year. It is designed to help schools build relationships with children and families who are starting school.
At our Induction Mornings before the summer holidays, each child will receive a teddy. Then, during the next few weeks and over the summer holidays, your child’s new teacher will set a fun activity each week for families to do at home together with teddy. The activities focus upon building and developing foundational skills of the early years. This could be anything from practising putting on your coat to washing your hands independently. Families can then communicate with teachers by sending them photos and comments of their child completing the activities. This will help your child's new teacher to begin to get to know your child and your family before they start school in September. These activities will then continue throughout the Reception year.

Induction Mornings
Children starting school in Reception in September 2026 will be invited to an Induction Morning session in school. Dates for this year's induction mornings are Monday 22nd, Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24th June. There will be an opportunity to meet their new class teacher and for the children and parents to spend time in their new classroom with their new classmates. Invitations will be sent out in early June, as soon as class lists are finalised.
School Visits
We will be offering school visit appointments on Wednesday 2nd, Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th September. These will consist of a 20-minute appointment in school for parents and their child to meet on a 1:1 basis with their new class teacher.
